Time again for the annual MBCA gathering for Seattle and many BC participants. First rainy event I can recall, but the rain stopped around noon. My wipers work. Quite a few oddballs here, some of which will have a caption (I am somewhat lazy) and probably won’t end up in order. Without further ado, here we go:
Drippy morning
I’ve always had issues with water spotted paint, so this irks me, but it wasn’t bad
Facelift E coupe is like a small S, pretty nice
Someone has a sense of humor
Euro 450SEL, nice car
Striking Adenauer, show winner
Canadian (of course) W220 S400, oddball V8 diesel
Brown
1986 with ~35K miles, as-new
W124 is a mint ~40K mile car
240D is in time capsule condition
Wonderful velour interior on the Euro 450SEL
The “other” fintail at the gathering, nice car
Sweet Ponton Binz wagon always gets smiles and awards
Dried off and shining
This was parked in a lot beside the event
And I saw this on the road on the way home:
That is all.

Loving the dark blue with white top on the Pagoda. And that Polizei W126! 10/10 would daily. Loads of great cars, and looks like a great turnout. How big is the chapter? Our local chapter only ever seems to pull newer cars, with a few minty R107s and W123s here and there.
Looks like an Auburn you spied on the way home, stunning! Looks like it’s fitted with Woodlights, wonder if that is original spec.

was the plate too trashy for a MBCA event? I swear I’ve seen this guy at every car show I’ve been to in the last three years... Some of which were hundreds of miles away

Niiiice! I freaking love the Adenauer.
And I’ve never seen a Ponton wagon - sweet!

It was fine, the event has been there as long as I have been around. It’s not a formal judged show, just a yearly gathering with an informal popularity contest vote, and a raffle.
The guy with the wagon is really into it, the car is a special order, and he has modified it a bit. Lots of $$$ around these parts.

I am not sure of the total membership, but the yearly event seems to average maybe 70-90 cars. Other events are generally a lot less attended. It’s a well organized chapter, with some dedicated people.
Yep, that’s a 31 or so Auburn with Woodlites, I remember reading about those when I was a kid. I was sitting at a light, and timed a lucky shot. Not something seen on the road very often.

The W126 police car actaully existed in Hamburg, Germany from around 1991 until 2003.

Hey what do you know about W115 220D? I’m going to be checking one out with an AT in a few weeks. Is there any common issues that need to be taken care of? Sounds like stuff like brakes, wheel bearings have been taken care of. I’m assuming the guy did bushings since he installed an air ride system. But who knows.

Interesting. Looks like an armored variant, too.
The car here was based on a 350SDL, a model that I think would be unusual there.

220D automatic will be amusingly slow. I am not sure of mechanical issues - if it isn’t cheap, maybe take it to a shop for a PPI. Like most old MB, they can be rust magnets, that’s probably what I would be most concerned about. Engines can be repaired, transmissions are solid if serviced, but body and structural metal work can be difficult and expensive.

Ya the slowness is my biggest concern lol, especially since I would have to drive it 90mi down I94 to get it home. He’s asking 3500 so not really worth a ppi. I’ll just check for rust then.

I’d try secondary roads in that thing, unless it has some kind of speed mods (doubtful). 0-60 in a 220D auto has to be 25 seconds, maybe more, and I suspect top speed isn’t much more than 70-75. $4500 is also relatively dear for one of those, so it should be in good cosmetic condition along with mechanically.
They probably rust like other period MBs, so examine rockers, wheelarches, floors, headlight area.

He said it will achieve highway speeds lol.

1985 highway speeds, downhill, tailwind, timed on a calendar :)
One good thing about these cars, assuming good mechanical order, they can be driven flat out for hours without real issue.

Why do they have humor with the police car?

A 350 SDL police car is funny, although I am not sure if in a ha-ha way.

I could walk around their for a long time I think, lots of understatingly good looking cars from MB in the past. Most definitely including yours, the matching coloured wheels get to me!

Thanks, glad you liked the pics.
Color-coded hubcaps were offered on some models into the early 80s, but phased out earlier on others.
